Back at Your Passion

“Monday is not the day to be back at the grindstone. Monday is the day to be back at your passion. If you’re working for the weekend you’re doing it wrong. Give it your all EVERYDAY!” ~unknown

I can honestly say I found myself working for the weekend when I was in Corporate America. Every now and then it’s ok, but what if we think about our careers as the fuel to our passion, perhaps our perspective of Monday’s would improve.

What is your passion? How will you give it your all everyday?

“Make the Best of Everything”

A while ago I started posting inspirational/motivational quotes on my Instagram Account. I typically post these on Mondays, Tuesdays or Thursdays. They’re my way of inspiring and encouraging others through my photography and inspirational quotes. With the New Year in full swing, I thought it would be helpful to share these posts here. Sometimes I add my own thoughts about the quote and others times I find it more appropriate to let the quote and photography speak for themselves.

Below is this week’s quote. I hope you find it inspiring!

Happy New Year!

Bring Your Passion With You

I love the beginning of a New Year. The fact it is a new decade makes it even more exciting. Some may look at the turning of a calendar page as just another day or month but to me the New Year brings a sense of self reflection and renewal for all things possible.

2019 definitely brought the opportunities to follow my passion in oh so many ways. As I reflected on the events from last year  I pulled together a few of my favorite photos to remind me of how fortunate I am that God has me in a place where I can immerse myself in doing the things I enjoy and spending time with those I love.

I am truly grateful, humbled and blessed for those who reached out to me for help with their photography needs (along with all the great help I had along the way) and look forward to what 2020 has to offer.

Speaking of 2020, I came across a great quote which seemed so appropriate for staying focused on the things you enjoy. The quote is by Mike Rowe and it goes like this…

Bring Your Passion With You

So, I leave you with this thought. Whatever your passion may be, whether photography, writing, painting, pottery, singing, needlework, helping others, parenting, etc. don’t just chase after it….. LIVE IT! DO IT! BE IT! BRING IT WITH YOU EVERY DAY!

Here’s to 2020 and a new decade of “Bringing Your Passion With You!”

Peggy’s Fried Chicken

My husband comes from a LARGE family. When I say large, we’re talking 11 kids (8 girls and 3 boys).  They are all wonderful individuals and I couldn’t be more fortunate to call them family.

Both parents have long since passed away, but they handed down many wonderful memories, traditions and gifts.  Lucky for me, my husband received the gift of making a great batch of fried chicken.  His mom, Peggy,  on the occasional Sunday would spend hours in the kitchen preparing a fried chicken dinner for the family.  A tradition which  in later years would prove to be one rich in memories.

Michael will tell you he learned to make her fried chicken through osmosis.  Peggy never really gave him any instructions.  Piece by piece and batch by batch he would simply watch as she cooked.  I’m sure she came by it the same way, too, spending time watching her mother (a Kentucky Southerner they fondly called Mimi) as she carefully prepared and simmered the chicken.  The tradition (so I am told) always included lima beans, rice and gravy, mashed potatoes and a batch of Mimi’s special biscuits and fresh chocolate pie.

Cooking fried chicken is a true labor of love especially for such a large family.  Although it’s a simple process with simple tools (a cast iron skillet, tongs and a brown paper bag) and  simple ingredients (chicken, Crisco shortening, flour, salt and pepper) it requires time and patience……..a LOT of patience.  The perfect batch of fried chicken hinges on two (2) things:  1) chicken, evenly coated by using the brown paper bag  and 2) a perfectly heated cast iron skillet.  Batch after batch and for hours on end it has to be cooked at a low heat and very slow pace, only turning each piece once it reaches a golden brown color.

Being the one dish I relinquished to Michael (a story for another day) many years ago, he really has mastered the process.  So much so, it’s not unusual for friends to frequently request a “fried chicken night.”  And yes, in keeping with Peggy’s tradition, all of the sides are prepared as well!

IMG_3064-083119-Peggy's-Fried-Chicken-Copyright

When family comes into town you can bet they will ask Michael to make a batch of fried chicken.  What will start as a small family gathering can easily turn into a major event once the word gets out that fried chicken is on the menu!

As the family begins to gather and Michael begins the process, it doesn’t take long for our kitchen to be filled with laughter and chatter as they each reminisce about family memories and the childhood reminders of Peggy’s fried chicken simmering in the pan.

Thoughts – Staying Focused

My 52 Week Photography Challenge took a detour…….well it pretty much stalled.  I have no clue why except that I just grew busy with life and other activities.  It’s really ok because it served it’s purpose for jump starting my photography in 2019.  And, it definitely gave my father something to do this winter when it was just a little too cold for him to venture outside and tinker in the yard (read my post here  52 Week Challenge: Week 2 – “My Everyday”). The remainder of the challenge list has some fun/interesting topics coming up so perhaps I’ll get inspired and hit the reset button…..we’ll see ;-)!

Photography Challenge or not, I am still (err) focused on my photography and continue to find other outlets and opportunities to broaden my skills.  I finally pulled together my website (Donna Robinson Photography) and I have shot a corporate event and a newborn photo session, too!  Plus, I have a part-time job helping a friend of ours (a personal trainer) with his social media, shooting his instructional videos and shooting other content for marketing purposes.  So, yes, I’m still actively following my passion!

And then there is always our backyard.  Between the garden, the birds and the critters there is always something to photograph.  The camera and “the big lens” as my husband refers to it, comes out every evening as we sit on our patio and catch-up about the day.

The squirrels are always entertaining at how nimble they are.  But, we had to scale back on the bird feeders because they were devouring our supply too quickly!

My husband moved the bird bath to the front of the flower bed and the activity has definitely picked up!  This little guy spent 2 – 3 minutes cleaning up!

Let’s Ride!

But our favorite critters are the chipmunks!  They are fast and efficient in how they gather their food.  We’ve actually given three (3) of them names because of their consistent patterns for gathering food:  “Lefty” because he comes out from the rocks on the left side of the house; “Malcom” because he comes in from the top middle of the wall; and the “Righty” because…….well you get the point.

Seriously?!?!  When have you ever seen a chipmunk in a tree?  Needless to say, he didn’t reach the bird feeder………but, he found the stash we left on the ground for him.

Michael’s convinced that he can get them trained to eat out of his hands by the end of summer.  He may be right……one little guy is getting brave and comes closer to us every night!

Now I know why some of my petunias didn’t make it!?!?

How do you “stay focused” on your passion?

Until next time, Happy Summer!

Giving Thanks Over The Desert Rose

The following is a post from Thanksgiving 2016.  As the Holiday Marathon begins, it’s a great reminder that Thanksgiving is more than the food on the table or the anticipation of the “black Friday sales.”  It’s about taking the time to pause and being grateful.  It’s about putting differences aside and remembering the importance of family, creating memories and showing your appreciation for  your loved ones near and far.

My heart is full……..

“Give thanks to the Lord for he is good. His love endures forever.”  Psalm 136:1 NIV

≈≈≈≈

I have many fond memories of my childhood.  And, like most everyone else some are good and some are not so good.  But, one of my favorite memories (which my sisters would also agree) is not of one particular event, but rather of multiple events centered around our mother’s dishes. These were the dishes that brought us together as a family every day at dinner time; these were the dishes where we chatted about the events of the day; these were the dishes that remind us of home, family and of her.

“Desert Rose by Franciscan” was the name of the pattern. With four (4) pink and white embossed flowers circling each plate, they were connected by their leaves and stems eloquently forming scalloped edges.  The dish set came with everything you can imagine….there were dinner plates, salad plates, dessert plates, cups and saucers and the list goes on.   There were even salt and pepper shakers in the shape of unopened blooms.

We don’t know what happened to her dish set.  It’s almost as if when she passed away the dishes disappeared as well.

But, something strange and wonderful happened this year……..The dishes found their way back into our family.  Well, not exactly the dishes, but a set just like them.  As my husband and I were wandering through Tuesday Morning, I stumbled upon a knock-off set, took a picture and sent it to my sister.  Within about 10 minutes she sent me a photo from an e-bay email link she had just received of an authentic set of the dishes.  After about 20 minutes of texting back and forth with our other sister, we realized that it was the 40th anniversary of her passing. Perhaps our mother was speaking to us through the dishes?

Fast forward to Thanksgiving……Dad’s favorite holiday a time of the year he especially enjoys having the family together.  Our typical get togethers are “buffet style, sit where you can find a seat kind of meals” leaving everyone scattered throughout different rooms.  And so, this year my sisters and I decided to make Thanksgiving extra special by transforming the living room into a dining room in order to seat everyone at one table.  Not a small feat to do, but we did it (thanks to the help of my husband)……..everyone had a seat at the table.  And, at every place setting was “Desert Rose.”

img_5120-112416-giving-thanks

With Dad seated at the head of the table and his grandchildren and great grandchildren intently listening to his every word, he proudly told the story of how the dishes came back into our lives.  And then, just like the original dishes, they became the dishes we said grace over; they became the dishes we chatted over and caught up with each other about all that is happening in our lives; they became the dishes that now meant family, home and reminded us of our mother and  “Giving Thanks over the Desert Rose.”

Thoughts – “Everyone Has a Story…..”

“Everyone has a story and I want to hear it!” What an awesome quote which will always remind me of my husband’s late Uncle Dick.  A retired Air Force Colonel, he had a wonderful gift for storytelling (a gift that later came in handy when he volunteered as a docent at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum). But, more than his knack for storytelling, he was also gifted with engaging people and listening to their stories.

My husband has this gift too, so I wasn’t surprised when he introduced me to Neal, a fellow guest at the B & B where we were staying  in New Smyrna Beach, FL.  I walked onto the dock just as Neal was baiting the hook of a borrowed fishing pole.  Michael began to tell me that Neal and his wife, Carol, had just driven down from Jacksonville to celebrate their wedding anniversary………THEIR 63rd!!!

IMG_5820 061018 Everybody Has A Story Copyright

As we exchanged the usual greetings, Neal began to tell us all about their life adventures.  A former Staff Sargent in the Air Force, he met his wife in a small town in Alabama.  Shortly, after becoming newlyweds they were stationed in Alaska (not exactly your ideal place to start a marriage).

As Neal continued to fish he spoke about life after the Air Force and how he used his G.I. Bill to go to college.  With a chuckle in his voice he went on about his career in electronics and later his retirement from insurance.  He retired at 63 because his CPA told him, “you both have your health, you are financially secure, go travel the world and enjoy your lives.”  And so, they did!

As the afternoon sun began to drop and the water became still, Neal reeled in the fishing line and packed up his tackle box.  We chatted as we walked off the dock and Neal invited us to join them later for cocktails on their balcony.

When we arrived, we were greeted with smiles and they offered us drinks as they pointed to the small suitcase below……a “traveling bar.”  Packed with all of the necessities (vodka, rum and bourbon) Neal and Carol were well prepared to celebrate their anniversary.   Michael and I looked at each, smiled and said to them “you sure do know how to travel!”  To which, Neal responded with a wink and his trademark chuckle “it saves on travel costs if you bring your own liquor.”

We chatted for well over an hour as they both shared  little stories about their life together.  Stories about their first few months as newlyweds in  Alaska; stories about their children and grand children; and stories about enjoying each other and making the most of life in retirement.   Each were very sweet, touching and gentle reminders of the importance of cherishing your loved ones and the memories you make each and every day.

Life is a journey and people come and go along the way.  Take the time to stop and talk to them even though they may be a stranger……..after all “Everyone has a story.”

2018 – Bring It On!

2018 has arrived and like every other year, thoughts of new beginnings, fresh starts and simply put a clean slate are running around in my head.  Thoughts of what I’d like to adjust and accomplish this year are also there with the usual goals at the top of the list: eat better, get more exercise, travel more, take more photos, write more posts, etc..   I’m filled with excitement for what the new year has to offer, despite the unknown that may be waiting around the corner.

But, if I had to sum things up into a few thoughts/goals for 2018 they would probably look like the following quotes I found on “Pinterest” (the first one I borrowed from my husband):

Hopefully, if I keep true to these throughout 2018, the other “goals” will all fall into place. What are your thoughts/goals for 2018?

Happy New Year, everyone!

Thoughts: “I’ll Take The “Other White Stuff”

I really don’t remember the last time we had this much snow in December.  Yes, we had snow in December, and even on Christmas Day but by the standards of the mid-westerners it was nothing more than a dusting.  If you have ever lived in Atlanta during the snow (or ice as we mostly get) you know all too well that 7 – 10 inches is a rare occurrence for us!

And, because it is so rare the weather forecasters’ predictions were a little off (we were only suppose to get “flurries.”)  By 3 p.m. last Friday we already had about 2 inches and the snow was coming down fast.  It didn’t take long for me to pull the camera out!

By Saturday morning, there was the most beautiful blanket of snow covering everything in site!

You would think we were in the mid-west with all of this snow!

Look at all the snow covering up the pansies!

Fortunately, the roads weren’t too bad and we were able to venture out later in the morning.   The photo below was taken as we crossed the Chattahoochee River.  I just love how the birds are lined up on the power lines as if to keep them safe from the freezing water.

IMG_3866 120917 Atlanta Snow copyright

The sun has been out the last couple of days, the temperature is beginning to rise and the snow is melting away.  Our little Winter Wonderland was nice while it lasted, but I think I’m ready for the “other white stuff……….”  a nice sandy beach and a warm ocean next to it!

Thoughts: “The Final Farewell – TAPS”

You couldn’t have asked for a better day to say farewell.  The skies were so blue and crystal clear.  As family and friends gathered, you could feel the quiet, calm and peace all around.

All of the details were precisely planned and carried out in the same manner and pace as others before. Everyone knew their place and their role.  And, with each snap, clip and salute the farewell began and our dear husband, father, grandfather, cousin and uncle was laid to rest with full Military honors in Arlington National Cemetery.

If you have never had the opportunity to participate in a Military burial at Arlington, it is an extremely humbling experience.

As we quietly and respectfully watched the military pall bearers escort the flag draped coffin from the  Old Post Chapel on Ft. Myer they precisely and carefully placed it on the horse drawn caisson.

The Air Force color guard and the soldiers tactfully guided the procession through Arlington as the sun glistened through the trees, casting shadows on the tombstones, the silence barely being broken by the echo of the coordinated footsteps of the horses.

IMG_8904 042717

The caisson came to a halt as we made the last turn at Patton and Eisenhower.  There, as the color guard took their place we all stood in the background watching while the priest received the family by the graveside.

IMG_8917 042717IMG_8937 042717

Then, just as earlier, the military pall bearers precisely removed the flag draped coffin from the caisson and carried it to the final resting place.

IMG_4984 042717JRJ

Off in the distance  the bagpipes began to play “Amazing Grace.” Carefully and articulately the flag was removed and folded corner to corner, and handed it to his wife while a 21 gun salute rang out.

IMG_4996 042717JRJ

Then, on cue, the bugle played the final farewell……..”Taps:”

Day is done, gone the sun,
From the lake, from the hills, from the sky;
All is well, safely rest, God is nigh.

Fading light, dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright.
From afar, drawing nigh, falls the night.

Thanks and praise, for our days,
‘Neath the sun, ‘neath the stars, neath the sky;
As we go, this we know, God is nigh.

Sun has set, shadows come,
Time has fled, Scouts must go to their beds
Always true to the promise that they made.

While the light fades from sight,
And the stars gleaming rays softly send,
To thy hands we our souls, Lord, commend.
